We’ve all heard that “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” but for me this theory has become the reason I get up in the morning and go to bed (way too late) at night. Because I believe that it’s not just who you know but how you know them. And there is no network more powerful than your alumni network.
I’m Jayne and I’m the CEO & co-founder of KonnectAgain – a startup technology company focused on creating engaged networks of alumni at the touch of a button.
It’s no secret that networking is important. But how do you find the right people to network with or know which connections are most relevant or beneficial to you? I learned the hard way when my fellow alumni, all first-degree LinkedIn connections, later became my co-founder, colleagues, advisors and investors – but not through LinkedIn or the University at all.
After hearing Datahug founder Connor Murphy speak at StartUp Weekend, I approached him with the idea for KonnectAgain. Connor shared my vision of a more connected world and became my mentor and first equity holder in the company. Little did I know at the time that we both attended the same University!
Fast forward 12 months, while visiting our San Francisco office, I arranged to meet a woman named Margaret Burgraff, a VP at Intel, to discuss the company’s need for an alumni relations platform. To my surprise Margaret was also an alum of my University! She has proved to be a great mentor and resource, and had I known we shared a common history I could have met her much earlier.
These are missed opportunities that are happening to people on a daily basis!
One of the most powerful parts of networking is finding the common dominator. KonnectAgain helps break down barriers by providing an exclusive portal that allows for relevant and tailored searches in order to connect and engage with the people that really matter to you.
So look around. It’s likely the people sitting next to you in class or down the hall at work that are going to be your business partner or biggest ally someday. And we promise to help you find them!
